Why Your Coils Burn Out Fast and How Mesh Helps

Technical guide · Puff Club Vape Leduc

Part of Power, airflow and resistance

A mesh coil is a heating element shaped like a fine metal screen instead of a single round wire. It sits inside the tank, wrapped in cotton that soaks up e-liquid. When you press the fire button, the metal heats and turns the liquid into vapor. A standard coil uses one round wire, so heat concentrates on a thin line. A mesh coil spreads the same power across a much wider, flatter surface. That single difference explains most of the advantages below, and most of the problems a mesh coil can fix.

Why it happens

Burnt hits, short coil life, and weak or uneven vapor usually come down to how heat is delivered.

A mesh coil does not remove these causes, but it spreads heat over more area, which reduces hot spots and scorching. That is the core advantage.

Step-by-step fix

If you are getting burnt hits or replacing coils too often, work through these steps in order.

  1. Prime a new coil before first use. Drip a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the exposed cotton around the coil, fill the tank, and wait five to ten minutes. This lets the cotton absorb liquid before any heat is applied.
  2. Start at a low wattage. Most coils list a recommended wattage range on the side. Begin at the bottom of that range, take a few puffs, then increase in small steps until the vapor feels right. This breaks in the cotton gradually.
  3. Check that your liquid matches the coil. Mesh coils with smaller, denser openings suit thinner, higher-propylene-glycol (PG) liquid, while wider-mesh coils handle thicker, higher-VG liquid. Propylene glycol is the thinner base ingredient. Using liquid that is too thick for the coil slows absorption and causes dry hits.
  4. Slow your puffs. Leave ten to twenty seconds between puffs so the wick can catch up. If you chain vape, take shorter draws or lower the wattage slightly.
  5. Inspect the coil before you blame the device. If the cotton visible through the side holes looks dark brown or black, or the vapor tastes burnt even after priming, replace the coil. A scorched coil cannot be cleaned back to normal.
  6. Keep the tank at least one-third full. The cotton wicks from the bottom or sides, and a low liquid level can leave the top of the wick dry.
