Why it happens

An all-in-one (AIO) device combines the tank, the coil, and the battery in a single sealed body. That compact design makes it simple to use, but it also means one small fault can stop the whole unit. Most problems come from a short list of causes.

The most common cause is a low or locked battery. AIO batteries are small, and they can drain faster than expected if the device is carried in a pocket where the fire button gets pressed. A second common cause is poor contact between the coil and the battery. The coil is the heating element that turns liquid into vapour; if it is not seated squarely, power cannot reach it. A third cause is a flooded or dry coil. A flooded coil has too much liquid around it, which makes a gurgling sound and weak vapour. A dry coil has too little liquid, which gives a harsh hit. Finally, a dirty or blocked airflow path reduces vapour even when the device fires.

Understanding which of these applies to your device is the fastest way to get it working again.

Step-by-step fix

Work through these steps in order. Each one is simple and takes only a minute.

1. Check the battery and the lock. Many AIO devices switch on and off with five quick presses of the fire button. Press the button once and watch for an indicator light. No light usually means the device is off, locked, or dead. Charge it with the cable that came with it, using a wall plug rather than a computer port, which often charges too slowly. Let it charge until the light shows full, which is usually a steady light instead of a blinking one.

2. Turn the device off before you touch the coil. Unscrew or pull out the pod or tank section. The coil is the small metal cylinder inside it. Check that it is pushed in straight and fully seated; a crooked coil breaks the electrical connection. If your device uses a replaceable coil, wipe the flat contact points on the coil and inside the device with a dry cloth. Built-up residue blocks the tiny current that heats the coil.

3. Clear a flooded coil. If you hear gurgling when you inhale, the coil is flooded. Remove the pod, hold it upside down over a paper towel, and give it a few gentle shakes or short, quick puffs without pressing the fire button. This pushes excess liquid out of the airflow. Wipe the base of the pod dry, reinstall it, and try again.

4. Fix a dry coil. If the hit tastes harsh, the coil is dry. After filling a new or empty pod, let it sit upright for five to ten minutes so the coil absorbs liquid. Never fire the device on an empty pod; doing so scorches the coil and the harsh taste will not go away. If the taste is already harsh from a dry burn, the only real fix is a new coil.

5. Clean the airflow. Airflow is the path air takes through the device. Use a dry cotton swab to clean the small air holes on the body and the pod. Do not push anything metal into the holes, which can tear the seal. A blocked airflow makes the device feel tight or produce no vapour at all.

6. Refill and check the liquid level. A low tank can expose the top of the coil and cause dry hits. Keep the tank above the minimum fill line marked on the pod. When you refill, leave a small air gap at the top; overfilling forces liquid into the airflow and causes flooding.

If the device still does not fire after these steps, the coil may have reached the end of its life. Coils wear out as the heating element degrades with use, and a worn coil produces little or no vapour. Replacing the coil or pod is the standard fix.

Prevention

A few habits keep an AIO device running well and cut down on the problems above.

Most all-in-one faults trace back to the battery, the coil, or the airflow. Working through the checklist above resolves the large majority of them without any special tools.
