Vape Screen or Buttons Not Working

Technical guide · Puff Club Vape Leduc

Part of Safety, cleaning and rules

A vape device that will not respond to button presses or will not light up its screen can often be fixed at home. This guide covers the common causes and the checks to run in order. It applies to regulated devices, the type with a screen and adjustable settings. If your device has no screen, skip the screen checks.

Why it happens

Step-by-step fix

Work through these steps in order, and stop as soon as one of them fixes the problem.

  1. Check the lock setting. Many devices lock or unlock when you press the fire button and an adjustment button together, or the two adjustment buttons together. Look at the screen for a lock symbol or message, and press the combination again if the device appears locked.
  2. Try to power the device on. Press the fire button five times quickly. On most devices this switches the power on and off. If the screen comes back, the device was simply off.
  3. Charge the battery. Connect the device to the charger it came with and wait a few minutes. If the screen shows a charging indicator or a battery level, the battery was too low. If the battery is removable, take it out, wipe both ends with a dry cloth, and put it back before charging. Never use a damaged battery.
  4. Clean the contacts. The contacts are the small metal points where the battery meets the device body and where the tank (the part that holds the liquid) screws on. Wipe them with a dry cloth or a cotton swab to remove e-liquid, dust, or residue. Do not use water or cleaning sprays on the device.
  5. Check for moisture. If the screen or buttons got wet, turn the device off and leave it in a dry place for several hours. Do not charge or fire the device until it is completely dry. If liquid reached the battery compartment or the charging port, stop using it and have it checked. Do not use heat from a hair dryer or an oven. If there is condensation behind the glass, wait for it to clear before you use the device again.
  6. Remove and reattach the tank. The tank screws onto the device through a threaded metal connection. Unscrew it slowly, wipe the threads and the flat metal contact in the middle with a dry cloth, and screw it back on so it sits straight and snug. A tank that is on too tight or too loose can trigger a protective shutdown.
  7. Check for damage. Look for cracks in the screen, buttons that are stuck or loose, or any sign the device has been dropped. A cracked screen or a button that no longer clicks back into place usually means that part needs repair or replacement.
  8. Try the device after each fix. Press the fire button only after the tank is attached and the battery is charged. If the screen shows an error code, note it down, because it tells you what the device has detected.
