When to Replace Your Vape Coil
Part of Coils, priming and burnt hits
A coil is the heating element inside your tank or pod. It contains a wire and a wick, which is the absorbent material that pulls e-liquid to the wire. The wire heats up and turns the e-liquid into vapour. Coils are wear items, which means they are meant to be replaced regularly as part of normal use.
Why it happens
Every coil has a limited lifespan. Two main things cause a coil to wear out.
First, the wick breaks down. The wick is usually made of cotton or a cotton-like fibre. Heat and repeated use slowly wear it out, and it loses its ability to hold and pass e-liquid. When the wick is worn, the wire can heat dry material, which produces a harsh, burnt taste.
Second, residue builds up on the wire. E-liquid contains ingredients that leave a deposit behind when they are heated. Some e-liquids contain more of these deposits than others, and e-liquids with more sweetener tend to leave more residue. Over time this residue coats the wire, which reduces how well the coil heats and changes the taste.
How long a coil lasts depends on several factors: how often you vape, the power setting you use, and the type of e-liquid. A coil used heavily at high power will wear out faster than one used lightly at low power. There is no fixed day count; you replace the coil when the signs below appear.
Step-by-step fix
The fix for a worn coil is to replace it. First, confirm the coil is the problem. Watch for these signs:
- A burnt or scorched taste that does not go away after a few puffs.
- A drop in vapour output with the same settings and battery level.
- The e-liquid in the tank turns darker than normal.
- A gurgling sound or leaking, which can mean the wick is no longer sealing properly.
- The taste becomes weak or muted even with a fresh fill of e-liquid.
If you notice one or more of these signs, replace the coil.
- Turn off your device and remove the tank or pod from the battery.
- Empty any remaining e-liquid from the tank. Pour it into a container or discard it; do not pour it back into the bottle you will keep using.
- Unscrew the base of the tank to expose the coil. Some pods are press-fit, which means the coil simply pulls out.
- Remove the old coil and set it aside. Coils cannot be cleaned reliably, so do not try to wash and reuse one.
- Before installing a new coil, prime it. Priming means putting a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the visible cotton openings of the coil so the wick is wet before you fire it.
- Install the new coil by screwing or pressing it into place. Reassemble the tank and fill it with e-liquid.
- Let the filled tank sit for five to ten minutes. This lets the wick soak up e-liquid and helps prevent a dry hit, which is a puff taken when the wick is not yet wet.
- If your device has adjustable power, start at the lowest recommended setting printed on the coil or on its packaging. Take a few gentle puffs, then raise the power slowly to your normal level.
- Wash your hands and wipe down the device and tank with a dry cloth or paper towel.
Prevention
You cannot make a coil last forever, but you can get more use from each one.
Prime every new coil before first use and let it soak after filling. A dry coil burns quickly and is damaged permanently.
Stay within the recommended power range printed on the coil. Running a coil above its range overheats the wire and shortens its life. Running far below the range can under-heat the e-liquid and leave residue behind.
Use e-liquids with less sweetener when possible. E-liquids with more sweetener leave more deposit on the wire. If you prefer an e-liquid with more sweetener, plan to replace coils more often.
Do not let the tank run empty. When the e-liquid level drops below the wick openings, the coil can heat dry material and burn.
Take a few puffs at a time rather than long, continuous draws. Very long draws keep the coil hot for longer and speed up wear.
Keep spare coils on hand. Coils are a normal consumable, and having a replacement ready means you can swap a worn coil as soon as you notice the signs instead of using a degraded one longer than you should.
Track roughly how many days a coil lasts under your normal routine. That gives you a baseline so you can tell when a coil is wearing out early, which can point to a power setting, e-liquid, or fill habit that needs adjusting.
