No Hit or Weak Hit: Vape Troubleshooting Guide

Part of Power, airflow and resistance

Why it happens

A vape that produces no vapour, or only a thin, weak puff, usually has one of a small number of causes. Most are simple and can be fixed at home.

Battery level. A low battery cannot supply enough power to heat the coil. The coil is the small wire heating element inside the tank that turns liquid into vapour. Many devices reduce output automatically as the battery drains, so a weak hit is often the first sign of a nearly empty battery.

Coil condition. Coils wear out. Over time, residue builds up on the wire and wicking material, so the coil heats poorly and produces less vapour. A burnt or very old coil can stop producing vapour almost entirely.

Connection faults. The device depends on clean metal-to-metal contact between the battery, the tank, and the coil. Dirt, liquid residue, or a loose part can interrupt that contact.

Airflow setting. The airflow ring controls how much air mixes with the vapour. If it is fully closed, or mostly closed, you get little or no vapour. If it is fully open, vapour can feel thin and weak.

Liquid delivery. The wicking material inside the coil must stay wet. If the liquid level is too low, or the coil was not primed before first use, the wick runs dry and produces little vapour.

Power setting. A wattage setting that is too low for the installed coil gives a weak hit. A setting that is too high can burn the coil quickly and then produce nothing.

Step-by-step fix

Work through these steps in order. Stop when the device works normally.

  1. Charge the battery. Connect the device to its charger and let it charge fully. If the device has removable batteries, use an external charger and check the battery age. Old batteries lose capacity and may need replacement.
  2. Confirm the device is on. Most devices turn on or off with five quick presses of the fire button. Press the fire button once while the device is on and check the screen or indicator light for a response.
  3. Clean the connection points. Unscrew the tank from the battery. Wipe the threaded area and the centre pin on both the tank and the battery with a dry cloth or paper towel. The centre pin is the small round metal contact in the middle of the threaded connection. Reattach the tank snugly, but do not overtighten.
  4. Check the liquid level. Look at the tank. If it is at or below the minimum fill line, or if the wicking holes in the coil are exposed, refill it. The wicking holes are the small openings where liquid enters the coil.
  5. Replace the coil. If the coil is more than one to two weeks old, tastes burnt, or looks dark through the openings, install a new coil. Prime it first: apply a few drops of liquid directly to the exposed wicking material, fill the tank, and wait five to ten minutes before firing. This lets the wick soak up liquid and prevents a dry, burnt first hit.
  6. Adjust the airflow. Find the adjustable ring near the base of the tank and rotate it to about halfway open. Take a test puff and open or close it slightly until the draw feels right.
  7. Set the correct wattage. Check the recommended wattage range printed on the side of the coil. Set the device to a value within that range. Start at the low end and increase gradually if the hit is still weak.
  8. Check for a locked or stuck fire button. Press the fire button and confirm the device fires. If it shows an error message, note the message and check the device manual for the meaning.
  9. Test with a known-good part. If you have a spare tank or a spare battery, swap one part at a time. This isolates whether the problem is the battery, the tank, or the coil.

Prevention

Charge regularly. Keep the battery above roughly one-quarter charge. Running a battery completely flat shortens its life and causes weak performance.

Replace coils on a schedule. Track how long each coil lasts and replace it before it fails. Heavy daily use shortens coil life.

Prime every new coil. Always wet the wicking material directly and wait several minutes after filling. This single habit prevents most burnt coils and dry hits.

Use the recommended wattage. Stay within the range printed on the coil. Running below it gives weak hits; running above it burns the coil.

Keep connections clean. Wipe the threaded connection and centre pin once a week. Remove any liquid that has leaked into the battery connection.

Store the device upright. Storing it on its side or upside down can flood the coil or dry out the wick, both of which cause weak hits.

Avoid extreme temperatures. Do not leave the device in a hot car or in freezing conditions. Extreme heat thins liquid and causes leaks; extreme cold thickens it and slows wicking.

Close the airflow when filling. Closing the airflow ring before refilling reduces pressure changes that force liquid into the coil and cause gurgling or weak vapour.
